Woman, MARIE a Sauteuse Indian (b. ABT 1747, d. 5 FEB 1784)

Note: Nation of Sauteux.

The name Badichon was used by the Indians who could not pronounce Labadie. (sort of a play on the badie part of the name) All of Marie's children carried the dit name of Badichon.

Mae Cote, in her family history, mentions the Indian as being from a northern branch of the Ojibway tribe, and that the couple lived along the lakes and rivers from Sault St Marie to the Niagara area. They rarely came to Sandwich, but had thier children baptised at Assumption when they visited. This reference also mentions that she died with her baby in December 1783. Death date proven incorrect by burial record at Assumption.

From Commerative Biographical Record of the Country of Essex by J.H. Beers 1905 reprinted 1906 call no R920com pg525.
"His second wife was a daughter of a chief of the Sioux tribe."

The baptism of Marie, a savage, on June 2, 1783 took place at the home of Labadie where she was dangerously ill, age around 36 years and the godmother was the wife of Bonaventure Reaume. She was apparently already pregnant with Charlotte.
Charlotte was born 12/31/1783. Marie subsequently died 2/6/1784, just a month after Charlotte was born.
