Nantais, Nicholas Henry (b. 19 MAR 1856, d. BEF 1956)

Note: This handwritten note, by Gordon Lawrence Nantau, was included in My Centennial Ancestors.
"The family surname of our family when properly spelled is NANTAIS. For some reason, along the line, some of the family changed the spelling to NANTAU. The spelling change was after Grandpa died. Before the change, all were baptised NANTAIS:

Ernest registered all his children as Nantau. However; he used both Nantais and Nantau during his lifetime. ex: Marriage certificate was Nantau but Crossing Card was Nantais.

Nicholas died first and told his family beforehand, they could either follow the Catholic Church or the Protestant (Anglican Church). They all decided to go with their mother as Anglican. So we were told.

Nantau, Isaac Ernest (Nantais) (b. 24 MAR 1884, d. 24 DEC 1963)

When our mother, Lucy, died; Harold and myself (Gordon) and dad went to order the monument stone from Don Clarkes Monuments; Don Clarke knowing the family well, and of the two spellings, asked us which spelling would go on the stone. Harold and myself said Nantau. Dad spoke up and said spell the name properly Nantais. That is why in Windsor Grove Cemetery, the stone monuments reads Nantais.
